There Are Recyclable Alternatives to Black Plastic

The environment is a growing concern for most North Americans and many consumers are beginning to put pressure on retailers to do more to protect the environment. They are right to do so as a third of all waste comes from packaging materials, a large part of that is food packaging. As an industry we must strive to do better. Some challenges will take years and large infrastructure changes to solve but others have simple solutions that require little to no financial investment to change.

A major example of this is removing black plastic from stores. Most black plastic has the recyclable logo on it so it must be recyclable right? In theory it should be but the problem is that the majority of recycling centers use infrared technology to sort plastic and these cameras cannot identify black plastic as it absorbs lights rather than reflecting it.

This is an enormous problem since 15% of the plastic in recycling centers is black. Where is that plastic ending up? Unfortunately, most of it ends up in landfills.

So what is the solution to this problem?

The simplest option is to replace black plastic with plastic that is clear or any other color. At Valany we have a wide range of PP and CPET products that are available in a wide variety of colors. Everything from our chicken roaster and rib containers to CPET trays for ready meals come in clear or colored alternatives. The amazing part is that switching to a different color tray often doesn’t add any cost!

Still some manufactures maintain that black is the best option. Faced with this customer demand and the environmental implications, Faerch decided something needed to be done. They created CPET NIR. CPET NIR is black CPET that contains a special dye that allows the trays to be detected by the infrared cameras while still appearing black to the human eye.
